Marc Sherman has been entertaining in the Philadelphia area and surrounding counties as a bandleader, pianist, and vocalist for the past 50 years, performing at weddings, dinner dances, corporate events, and restaurants. For the past decade, he has also entertained at many senior facilities. He sings in eight languages, and his well-trained ear has enabled him to commit thousands of songs to memory. He performs music of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s; Broadway show tunes; classical piano solos; Sinatra standards; and sing-along favorites. He enjoys taking audience requests prior to his performances.

Marc began picking out tunes at age 4, as he sat next to his father (who played by ear) on the piano bench in their Philadelphia home. At age nine he was taking lessons, and by the end of high school decided to make music his career. Marc entered Temple University’s College of Music as a Piano/Voice Major. While at Temple, he recorded three albums with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy as part of the Temple University Concert Choir. Marc graduated first in his class in 1969 with a Degree in Music Education, and taught music in the Philadelphia School District for 35 years. Early in his career, Marc sang with Duke Ellington’s band, and played in Warren Covington’s big band. He has developed a unique style which incorporates his years of training and performance.

Bing Crosby: Bing Crosby was arguably the most important entertainment figure of the first half of the twentieth century. He made over 70 feature films and recorded more than 1,600 songs, including “White Christmas,” “Pennies from Heaven,” “Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra,” and “True Love.”

Jule Styne: Jule Styne was a remarkably versatile songwriter, equally successful on Broadway as he was in Hollywood. With Sammy Cahn, he produced such hits as “It´s Been A Long, Long Time,” “Let It Snow,” “Time After Time,” and “I Don´t Want To Walk Without You, Baby.” His Broadway show scores include “Gypsy,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” “Bells Are Ringing” and “Funny Girl.”

He Wrote That?: We all know the names of famous songwriters like Gershwin, Berlin and Porter. But how about Don Raye, Gene De Paul, Tom Adair, Matt Dennis, Jack Lawrence, Johnny Burke and Harry Woods? They wrote such hits as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Tenderly,” “Side By Side,” “Here’s that Rainy Day,” and many more.

An Hour with the Gershwins. A retrospective of the life and music of George and Ira Gershwin, told through stories and song. Included are George and Ira’s most famous songs, as well as some of George’s top classical compositions, ending with a mini-version of Rhapsody in Blue.

Music from the Oscars. An hour of songs that won an Academy Award for “Best Song from a Motion Picture”—spanning from 1936 (when the category was first introduced at the Oscars) through 1997. The background of each song will be discussed, including the composers, the movie the song came from, and who sang it in the film.

Classical Music with Commentary. Classical piano music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras. The composer and background of each piece will be discussed before its performance.

100 Years of Broadway. An hour of songs from Broadway musicals spanning 1919 to 2005. The background of each song and show will also be discussed.

Around the World in 22 Songs! In this program, we begin in America, traveling to the Caribbean, Central and South America, then across the ocean to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia, and finally back to the U.S.A. Through song and commentary, and singing in 10 languages, Marc will explore the rich diversity of music in cultures and countries around the world.
