Impeachment: What it is and how it works – a historical perspective of the use of impeachment to hold elected officials, who have special duties acquired by taking an oath of office, accountable. Alexander Hamilton in the Federalist No. 65, described high crimes and misdemeanors as, “those offences which proceed from the misconduct of public men…from the abuse or violation of some public trust.” We will follow the development of the impeachment process from the first use in 14th century England up to the present use as described in the US Constitution. We will also explore the impeachments of Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump twice and the investigation of Richard Nixon, who resigned before being impeached.
